Travis Scott: Hip-Hop's Stadium Showman

Travis Scott: Hip-Hop's Stadium Showman

Jacques Bermon Webster II, known as Travis Scott, was born on April 30, 1991, in Houston, Texas. He started rapping in a hip-hop duo called The Graduates in 2008, and in 2012 signed his first major-label deal with Epic Records, followed by a deal with Kanye West's GOOD Music. His stage name combines the first name of a favourite uncle with the first name of Kid Cudi, one of his biggest inspirations.

From Mixtapes to Rodeo

Scott's first full-length project, the mixtape Owl Pharaoh, was self-released in 2013, followed by Days Before Rodeo in 2014. His debut studio album, Rodeo (2015), was led by the hit single "Antidote" and established his signature sound: trap beats, psychedelic textures, and heavily processed vocals.

Birds, Astroworld, and Number Ones

His second album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (2016), became his first number-one album on the Billboard 200. Then came Astroworld (2018), named after a defunct amusement park in his hometown of Houston. It produced his first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "Sicko Mode," and became a cultural phenomenon. He followed it with Utopia (2023), which also debuted at number one.

Cactus Jack and Beyond

In 2017, Scott founded Cactus Jack Records, signing and developing artists including Don Toliver and Sheck Wes. He has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards and won a Billboard Music Award. Beyond music, he has partnered with brands including Nike and McDonald's, and his immersive live shows have made him one of hip-hop's biggest touring forces.

Scott's collaborative streak includes the 2017 joint album Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho with Quavo, and the Cactus Jack compilation JackBoys (2019), which topped the Billboard 200. His single "Franchise" (featuring Young Thug and M.I.A.) made him the first artist on the Hot 100 to have three songs debut at number one in less than a year. His blend of trap, psychedelic textures, and arena-sized ambition has made him one of the defining rap artists of the streaming era.

Legacy

Travis Scott built a world around his music — a sound, a visual language, and a live experience that fans travel across the world to see. He turned atmosphere into a career. His Cactus Jack label and festival-sized shows have made him a model for how rap artists build worlds, not just songs.
