Tips Industries: Bollywood Music Label Journey

Tips Industries — now known as Tips Music — is one of India's most enduring music companies. Founded by two brothers in 1975, it journeyed from selling vinyl records to running cassette factories producing hundreds of thousands of tapes a day, and finally to becoming a digital-first catalogue business. Its story is a masterclass in adapting to every format change the industry has thrown at it.

1975: Two Brothers and Vinyl Records

Brothers Kumar S. Taurani and Ramesh S. Taurani founded Tips Industries in 1975 in Mumbai. They began by setting up a distribution network for vinyl records, claiming to have become the biggest distributor in Western India by 1977. They dealt with major companies of the era, including the Gramophone Company of India (now Saregama) and Polydor (now Universal Music). In 1981, the brothers moved beyond distribution and launched their own small-scale record label, focusing initially on non-film and regional music.

The Cassette Era

In 1988, Tips entered Hindi film music. Realising they needed their own manufacturing capacity, the brothers established Tips Cassettes & Records Co as a partnership firm in 1988, setting up their first manufacturing facility in 1990 in Palghar, Maharashtra. A second facility followed in Silvassa in 1997. At their peak, the brothers' factories started by producing about 10,000 cassettes per day, and by the early 1990s output had increased to around 200,000 cassettes daily. The company went public on 1 July 1999.

Big Albums, Big Bets

Tips built its reputation on major Hindi film soundtracks. On the Game Changers podcast, Kumar Taurani named the company's three most expensive album acquisitions — Yaadein, Taal, and Pardes — all of which had one name in common: filmmaker Subhash Ghai. Pardes (1997) featured music by Nadeem–Shravan, while Taal (1999) was composed by A.R. Rahman and became one of the most beloved soundtracks of its era.

The Digital Pivot

The early 2000s brought a downturn as piracy and the shift away from cassettes and CDs hit physical sales. Tips shifted toward digital distribution and licensing, monetising its catalogue through caller tunes, online video, and streaming platforms. The physical market for Tips today is nearly zero, focused mainly on vinyl for collectors. In 2023, Tips signed a global music publishing agreement with Sony Music Publishing to promote its catalogue in international markets, and launched Tips Tamil to tap into the Tamil music industry. In September 2024, following the demerger of the film division, Tips Industries Limited changed its name to Tips Music Limited to reflect its focus on the music business.
