T-Series: How India's Biggest Music Label Was Built

T-Series is India's largest music record label, and one of the most powerful music companies in the world. It runs one of the biggest YouTube channels on the planet and has produced more than 90 films. Yet it began with a fruit juice seller's son, a small cassette shop in Delhi, and a simple idea: make music affordable for everyone.
The Cassette King of Delhi
Gulshan Kumar Dua was born in 1951 into a Punjabi-Hindu family. His father ran a fruit juice stall in New Delhi's Daryaganj area. Drawn to music from an early age, Kumar entered the business when his family purchased a shop selling low-cost audio cassettes and records. In 1983, he founded Super Cassettes Industries, the company that would become T-Series. The early business focused on inexpensive devotional songs and cover versions of popular tracks — music priced for ordinary Indian households.
The Breakthrough Soundtracks
T-Series' first major breakthrough came in 1988 with the soundtrack of the Bollywood blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, composed by Anand–Milind, which became one of the best-selling Indian music albums of the 1980s, with over 8 million sales. The follow-up was even bigger: Aashiqui (1990), composed by Nadeem–Shravan, sold around 20 million copies and became the best-selling Indian soundtrack album of all time. Albums like Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin followed, and T-Series became the dominant force in Bollywood music.
A New Distribution Model
Kumar's genius was not just in picking hits — it was in distribution. He moved beyond upscale record stores and ensured T-Series cassettes were available at local markets, roadside shops, and small vendors, making music accessible to every Indian household. By integrating music production, distribution, and marketing under one brand, he created a business model that transformed Bollywood's music industry. He also gave early platforms to singers who would define an era, including Anuradha Paudwal, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, and Sonu Nigam.
After Gulshan Kumar
Gulshan Kumar was murdered in 1997. Since then, T-Series has been led by his son Bhushan Kumar and his younger brother Krishan Kumar. Under Bhushan Kumar's leadership, the company expanded beyond music into film production, distribution, and digital entertainment, becoming one of the most prominent names in Indian cinema. The T-Series YouTube channel became the most-viewed channel on the platform, and the label remains India's largest. The lesson of T-Series is that a label's power comes not just from its catalogue, but from how it reaches its audience.
