Sponsorships in Music: Who Pays for Concerts and Tours

Tickets alone rarely pay for a big concert or festival. Behind most large music events is a sponsor — a brand that pays to attach its name to the show. Sponsorships are the hidden engine of live music. Here is who pays, why they pay, and how it works.

Why brands sponsor music

Brands sponsor music to reach young audiences. More than half of India's population is under 25, and music events are typically attended by urban audiences in the 18-35 age group — the audience most consumer brands want. Music connects to mood, attitude, and lifestyle, and a brand that establishes a musical connection becomes, in the words of one branding executive, cool and hip. Sponsorships buy visibility, activations, and association with experiences fans love.

Title sponsors and festival partnerships

Some of India's best-known festivals grew on sponsorships. Bacardi is the title sponsor of the NH7 Weekender festival. Mahindra & Mahindra attaches its name to the Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai. Red Bull created the Red Bull Bedroom Jam for amateur bands. Absolut vodka sponsored Sunburn, the electronic dance music festival. Coca-Cola created Coke Studio @ MTV, which aired on MTV, Colors, and Doordarshan. NODWIN Gaming has partnered with Exceed Entertainment to drive sponsorship for NH7 Weekender, showing that sponsorship management itself is now a specialised business.

How festival money works

For many Indian festivals, sponsorships have historically provided the bulk of the budget. One Economic Times report on Indian festivals put a ballpark figure of around 60% of a festival's budget coming from sponsors, with ticket sales accounting for around 25% and food and beverage sales adding another 15%. On the cost side, nearly 50% of expenses go to production — staging, lights, sound — and artists' fees take another large share. These are reported figures from festival organisers, and the mix varies by event.

Brand activations at concerts

Modern sponsorships go far beyond logos on a stage. At AP Dhillon's concert, Mondelez used a drone to shower Cadbury Fuse on audiences. Bisleri's premium water brand Vedica partnered with concerts by Dua Lipa and Bryan Adams, as well as at Lollapalooza. Nissan India was the official driven-by sponsor partner for an event. These activations give brands direct contact with fans — and give organisers revenue beyond tickets.

What it means for artists

Sponsors follow audiences. Artists who draw crowds — live or online — become attractive to brands, directly or through the events they play. For independent artists, sponsorships usually arrive through festivals and tours first: the event gets the sponsor, and the artist gets the stage. Build the audience, and the sponsors follow.
