Sony Music Entertainment: History and Global Reach

Sony Music Entertainment (SME) is the second-largest global music company, standing alongside Universal and Warner as one of the industry's "Big Three." Its roots stretch back nearly a century, through some of the most famous names in recording history — Columbia, Epic, RCA, and Arista.

From American Record Corporation to CBS Records

Sony Music's story begins in 1929, when the American Record Corporation (ARC) was founded. The company grew through the following decades, acquiring the Columbia Phonograph Company in 1934. In 1938, the Columbia Broadcasting System acquired the company, renaming it Columbia Recording Corporation — later Columbia Records. Columbia became an industry leader when it introduced the LP record in 1948, a format soon adopted as the standard across the recording industry. Epic Records followed in 1953.

The Sony Era Begins

In 1968, CBS Records formed a joint venture with Sony in Japan, creating CBS/Sony Records. Twenty years later, in 1988, Sony acquired the CBS Record Group for $2 billion. That acquisition brought historic labels including Columbia Records and Epic Records under Sony's umbrella, and Sony Music Entertainment was launched in 1991. In 2004, Sony merged its recording operations with Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) to form the Sony BMG joint venture, uniting Sony's Columbia and Epic labels with BMG's RCA, Arista, Jive, and LaFace imprints. Sony later bought out BMG's share, bringing the combined operation fully under its control.

Four Flagship Labels

Today, Sony Music operates four frontline flagship labels:

The Roster and the Reach

Sony Music's artist roster has included some of the most recognisable names in music, among them Adele, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey. Beyond recordings, Sony also runs a major music publishing business. In India, Sony Music India is one of the country's leading labels, competing with T-Series and Zee Music for Bollywood and independent music. For artists, Sony's global footprint means a deal can open doors in dozens of markets — but, as with any major, it comes with long contracts and label ownership of masters.
