Shreya Ghoshal: The Voice That Defined a Generation of Film Music

Shreya Ghoshal, born 12 March 1984 in Berhampore, West Bengal, is one of the most prolific and influential singers of India. Noted for her wide vocal range and versatility, she has won five National Film Awards, seven Filmfare Awards, and ten Filmfare Awards South. She began learning music at the age of four and started formal training in classical music at six. Her career is a masterclass in longevity, discipline, and emotional precision.

A Teenage Breakthrough

At sixteen, Ghoshal won the television singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma, where she was noticed by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's mother. That win led directly to her Bollywood playback debut in Bhansali's Devdas in 2002. She recorded five songs for the film, including "Bairi Piya," "Silsila Ye Chahat Ka," and "Dola Re Dola." Her performance earned her the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer, the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, and the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.

A Catalogue Across Languages

From Devdas onward, Ghoshal became the voice behind a vast run of film songs, including "Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai," "Piyu Bole," "Barso Re," "Yeh Ishq Hai," "Teri Ore," "Sun Raha Hai Na Tu," "Deewani Mastani," and "Param Sundari." Beyond Hindi cinema, she has recorded extensively in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Marathi films, winning multiple state film awards for her South Indian work. She has sung in more than twenty languages.

Honours Beyond the Studio

Ghoshal has performed on stages around the world, including Wembley Arena, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. In 2010, the Governor of Ohio declared 26 June "Shreya Ghoshal Day." In 2013, she was honoured in the UK House of Commons. In 2017, she became the first Indian singer to have a wax figure displayed at Madame Tussauds in India. She has also featured five times in the Forbes list of the top 100 celebrities from India.

Legacy

Alongside playback singing, Ghoshal has appeared as a judge on several television reality shows and in music videos. More than two decades after Devdas, she remains one of the most in-demand vocalists in Indian cinema, a singer whose voice has carried love stories, period epics, and chart-topping dance numbers with equal ease.
