Santhosh Narayanan: Tamil Cinema's Composer

Santhosh Narayanan: Tamil Cinema's Composer

Santhosh Narayanan is a prominent figure in contemporary South Indian film music. Born on 15 May 1983 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, he is a composer, music producer, arranger, and singer whose scores — blending film music, jazz, folk, hip-hop, rock, and electronic — have defined a generation of Tamil cinema, from Attakathi to Kalki 2898 AD.

Early Life

Santhosh was born in Tiruchirappalli and educated at RSK Higher Secondary School. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science at J. J. College of Engineering and Technology, Tiruchirappalli. After completing his education, he worked as a recording engineer, arranger, and programmer before beginning to produce independent music and compose for films. He composed music, including two original songs, for the Telugu short film Advaitham, and performed with the contemporary folk music band La Pongal in live shows in 2009. Through Mani Ratnam, he also got to work on A. R. Rahman soundtracks, starting with Guru (2007).

The Debut That Changed Gaana

Santhosh made his debut as an independent composer with the 2012 film Attakathi, directed by Pa. Ranjith. He composed a song in the gaana genre for the film, "Aadi Pona Aavani", and gave a then-unknown Gana Bala — who had been singing gaana songs at funerals — the chance to sing it. Along with a second gaana song, "Nadukadalula Kappala", both songs became popular, making Gana Bala a star, and were said to have brought gaana back to Tamil cinema.

The Collaborations

His collaborations with directors Pa. Ranjith, Karthik Subbaraj, and Mari Selvaraj have produced celebrated scores for films such as Pizza (2012), Jigarthanda (2014), Kabali (2016), Vada Chennai (2018), Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Sarpatta Parambarai (2021), and Karnan (2021). His work on films including Soodhu Kavvum and Cuckoo was critically acclaimed.

Going Pan-Indian

Santhosh has composed beyond Tamil cinema, working on notable Telugu and Malayalam films. In 2024, he composed for the large-scale sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD, bringing his genre-blending sound to one of Indian cinema's biggest productions. He has also worked on the background score for the Hindi film Sikandar (2025).

Signature Sound

Santhosh's music moves between street folk and jazz, between raw percussion and electronic texture. What holds it together is a feeling for place — his scores sound like the worlds his films are set in. From gaana to sci-fi, he remains one of the most distinctive voices in Indian film music.
