Pritam: Bollywood's Hit-Making Composer

Pritam Chakraborty, known simply as Pritam, is one of the most successful music directors in modern Bollywood. Born 14 June 1971, he has composed for more than a hundred Bollywood films, building a reputation for blending Indian classical music with Western styles. His soundtracks have powered some of the biggest films of the past two decades, from Dhoom and Jab We Met to Barfi! and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
From Geology to Film Music
Pritam grew up in a Bengali family and received his early musical training from his father. He learned guitar while still in school, then studied geology at Presidency College. In 1994, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune to study Sound Recording and Engineering. After completing his training, he moved to Mumbai in 1997 and began composing advertising jingles for brands such as Santro, Head & Shoulders, Emami, Limca, Complan, and McDonald's, along with title tracks for television serials.
The Breakthrough Years
Pritam's film debut came with Tere Liye in 2001, composed with Jeet Gannguli, followed by Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. His compositions for Dhoom in 2004 were a runaway hit, with the title track released in Hindi and English versions. He followed with Gangster, Dhoom 2, and Life in a... Metro. In 2007, "Mauja Hi Mauja" from Jab We Met, directed by Imtiaz Ali, won him a Zee Cine Award for Best Track of the Year, and the film won him his first Apsara Award for Best Music Director.
A Decade of Chart-Toppers
Pritam went on to compose for Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal (2009) and Cocktail (2012), both critical and commercial successes. His Sufi songs for Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai (2010), including "Pee Loon" and "Tum Jo Aaye," became chartbusters. His soundtrack for Barfi! earned him two Filmfare Awards, and he later won Filmfare Awards for Best Music Director for Dhoom and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2017). In 2013, he worked on his 100th film as a music director, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara.
Signature Sound and Legacy
Pritam's strength has always been range: high-energy dance numbers, Sufi ballads, romantic melodies, and soulful acoustic tracks. He has also mentored and collaborated widely, and served as a judge on television music competitions. His career shows how versatility, consistency, and a feel for what audiences want can sustain a composer at the top for more than twenty years.
