Neha Kakkar: Bollywood Playback Success Story

Neha Kakkar: Bollywood Playback Success Story

Neha Kakkar's story is one of the most remarkable in modern Indian music. Born on 6 June 1988 in Rishikesh, she began singing at religious gatherings as a small child, was eliminated early from a reality show, and still went on to become one of Bollywood's most-streamed playback voices and the first Indian singer to win a YouTube Diamond Award.

Early Life

Neha was born into a family of modest means in Rishikesh. She began performing at a very early age at religious events, singing alongside her elder siblings Sonu Kakkar and Tony Kakkar, both of whom also became singers. Music was the family livelihood, and she grew up singing before she grew up doing much else.

Indian Idol and the Long Climb

In 2005, Neha participated in the second season of the singing reality show Indian Idol. She was eliminated early in the competition. It would have been easy for that to be the end of the story. Instead, she kept working. She made her Bollywood debut as a chorus singer in the film Meerabai Not Out, and spent years building a career song by song.

Breakthrough

Her breakthrough came with the dance track "Second Hand Jawaani" from Cocktail (2012). A run of popular party and dance songs followed, including "Sunny Sunny" from Yaariyan, "London Thumakda" from Queen (2014), "Manali Trance" from The Shaukeens, and "Dhating Naach" from Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. By the mid-2010s she was one of Bollywood's most in-demand voices for high-energy tracks, with later hits including "Kala Chashma" from Baar Baar Dekho, "Dilbar", "Aankh Marey", and "O Saki Saki".

Digital Dominance

Neha's reach extends far beyond film songs. In 2019, she was listed among the most-viewed female artists on YouTube. In January 2021, she became the first Indian singer to win a YouTube Diamond Award. She appeared in the Forbes India Celebrity 100 in 2017 and 2019, and in Forbes' Asia's 100 Digital Stars list in December 2020. She is also one of the most-followed Indian artists on Spotify.

Full Circle

Neha later returned to Indian Idol as a judge, starting with its 10th season in 2018 — the same show that had once eliminated her. Her journey from singing at religious gatherings to judging the country's biggest singing competition is a reminder that an early rejection is not a final verdict.
