Music Distribution for Independent Artists in India: Complete 2026 Guide

You do not need a record label to release music in India in 2026. A distributor gets your independently-owned track onto streaming platforms without you signing away your rights. But the Indian market has its own platforms, its own income streams, and its own traps. This guide covers everything you need to release successfully.
Step 1: Prepare your release assets
Before you upload anything, prepare: WAV audio files in 16-bit or 24-bit, cover artwork at 3000 x 3000 pixels in JPG format, your song title, artist name, featured artists if any, songwriter and composer information, lyrics, and your release date. Having everything ready helps your release pass quality checks faster. You cannot upload directly to JioSaavn or most other platforms — you need a distributor to deliver your release for you.
Step 2: Choose a distributor that covers India properly
Your distributor must cover three groups of platforms. International: Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, and Deezer. Indian: JioSaavn, Gaana, Wynk Music, and Hungama. Social: Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Reported entry pricing for international distributors includes DistroKid at roughly ₹2,100 per year, TuneCore at roughly ₹1,900 per year, and Ditto Music at roughly ₹1,600 per year — always verify current pricing, as figures change. Indian-focused distributors may charge in rupees and offer local payment options.
Step 3: Do not ignore caller tunes
Here is what most international guides miss: international distributors generally do not offer caller tune distribution, and in India caller tunes are a massive revenue stream. When someone sets your song as their Jio Tune or Airtel Hello Tune, you earn money every month. Indian distributors typically offer caller tune distribution across Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL. If your audience is primarily Indian, this single feature can matter more than a small difference in royalty percentage.
Step 4: Understand what you will earn
Approximate per-stream payouts reported for the Indian market are: Spotify ₹0.15 to ₹0.25, Apple Music ₹0.50 to ₹0.70, JioSaavn ₹0.05 to ₹0.10, Gaana ₹0.03 to ₹0.08, and YouTube Music ₹0.10 to ₹0.20. These are approximate figures — actual payouts depend on listener location, premium versus free tier, song length, and each platform's monthly revenue. A stream only counts if the listener plays at least 30 seconds. Downloads, caller tunes, and YouTube Content ID claims are separate income streams on top of streaming.
Step 5: Time your release
Most distributors recommend submitting your release at least 3 to 5 days before your target date. Allow time for distributor approval, typically 24 to 48 hours, plus 3 to 7 days for platforms to make the release live. Submitting early also gives you time to pitch for Spotify playlist consideration and set up pre-save campaigns. Never rush a release the day before — a failed quality check with no buffer means a missed date.
