Michael Jackson: The King of Pop's Enduring Legacy

Michael Joseph Jackson, born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, and died June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and philanthropist. Dubbed the "King of Pop," he is widely regarded as one of the most culturally significant figures of the 20th century — an artist whose songs, videos, concerts, and fashion transformed visual performance in popular music.
The Jackson 5 and Early Stardom
The eighth of ten children in the Jackson family, Jackson made his public debut at age six as the lead singer of the Jackson 5. The group signed with Motown in 1968 and achieved worldwide success with him as its lead singer, on early hits including "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "I'll Be There." He began his solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group.
Off the Wall and Thriller
Jackson rose to solo stardom with Off the Wall (1979), produced by Quincy Jones, which featured "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You." He achieved unprecedented global success with Thriller (1982), which became the best-selling album in history. The music videos for "Thriller," "Beat It," and "Billie Jean" redefined the medium, broke racial barriers on television, and helped propel MTV to fame.
Bad, Dangerous, and the Moonwalk
Bad (1987) was the first album to produce five US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana." Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995) followed, the latter producing "You Are Not Alone," the first song to debut at number one on the Hot 100. His final album, Invincible, arrived in 2001. Through his stage and video performances, he popularised street dance moves including the moonwalk, the robot, and the anti-gravity lean.
Legacy
Jackson won 13 Grammy Awards, including a record-breaking eight for Thriller in 1984, and was a double inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1997 and as a solo artist in 2001. He is also a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. With estimated sales of over 400 million records worldwide and 13 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, his influence reaches across pop, R&B, rock, dance, and hip-hop to this day.
