Kendrick Lamar: Rap's Pulitzer Poet

Kendrick Lamar: Rap's Pulitzer Poet

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California. He began rapping in elementary school, influenced by Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre, and started his career as a teenager under the name K-Dot. He signed with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2005. Two decades later, he is regarded as one of the greatest rappers and lyricists of all time — and the only rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City

Lamar's major-label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city, was released on October 22, 2012. A cinematic concept album about growing up in Compton, it earned widespread critical acclaim and became the longest-charting hip-hop album on the Billboard 200. Singles like "Swimming Pools (Drank)" and "Poetic Justice" brought his storytelling to a global audience.

To Pimp a Butterfly and DAMN.

To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) fused hip-hop with jazz, funk, and soul, debuting at number one and winning five Grammy Awards including Best Rap Album. Songs like "Alright" became anthems of social justice movements. Then came DAMN. (2017), led by the number-one single "HUMBLE." In 2018, DAMN. earned Lamar the Pulitzer Prize for Music — the first time the prize went to a non-classical or non-jazz work.

Super Bowls and Later Work

Lamar performed at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show in 2022 alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent. He returned with the double album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (2022), then GNX (2024). In 2025, he headlined the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, and his song "Not Like Us" won Song and Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

Lamar also curated and produced Black Panther: The Album (2018), writing and producing 14 songs for the superhero film's soundtrack, which received critical acclaim. He co-founded the creative company pgLang with Dave Free, and earlier in his career was a member of the hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy alongside his Top Dawg Entertainment label-mates Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q. His work has earned him more than 20 Grammy Awards across his career.

Legacy

Kendrick Lamar proved that rap could be literature. His albums are studied for their narrative depth, moral complexity, and musical ambition — and his Pulitzer win permanently changed how the world values hip-hop as an art form.
