Karan Aujla: The Punjabi Hitmaker's Journey From Songwriter to Superstar

Jaskaran Singh Aujla, born 18 January 1997 in Ghurala village, Ludhiana district, Punjab, known as Karan Aujla, is an Indian singer, rapper, and songwriter primarily associated with Punjabi music. Popularly known as "Geetan Di Machine," he is recognised for his lyrical style, global chart success, and albums such as Bacthafucup and Making Memories. He is regarded as one of the leading contemporary artists in Punjabi hip-hop and pop music.

Early Life and Songwriting Beginnings

Aujla lost both his parents as a young boy and was raised by his sisters and paternal uncle. From an early age, he showed interest in writing poetry and lyrics. He later moved to Canada, where he continued developing his musical career while maintaining strong roots in Punjabi culture. He started as a songwriter for other artists, penning "Range" for Jassi Gill in 2014, and worked as a songwriter for various artists including Deep Jandu and Elly Mangat.

Stepping Into the Spotlight

In 2016, Aujla released his debut song as a lead artist, "Property of Punjab," and began featuring as a guest artist in songs. He came into the limelight with tracks like "Yaarian Ch Fikk," "Unity," "Alcohol 2," and "Lafaafe." His mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2018 with "Don't Worry," his first song to enter the UK Asian chart. In 2020, his singles "Jhanjar," "Red Eyes," and "Kya Baat Aa" entered the top 10 of the chart, while "So Far" entered the top 5.

Albums and Chart Success

Aujla's debut album, Bacthafucup, peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart and 34th on the New Zealand albums chart. He is known for numerous tracks that have charted on the UK Asian chart published by the Official Charts Company, while seven have charted on the Global YouTube music chart. His later work includes the album Making Memories and hit singles such as "Don't Look," "Hint," "Chitta Kurta," and "Softly."

The Songwriter's Edge

What sets Aujla apart is that he arrived as a writer first. He wrote the hit "G.O.A.T." for Diljit Dosanjh, and his pen remains one of the most sought-after in Punjabi music. In 2024, his Bollywood song "Tauba Tauba" from Bad Newz became a viral hit, extending his reach to Hindi film audiences and proving that a songwriter's craft can carry an artist from a Punjab village to global charts.
