Justin Bieber: From YouTube to Global Stardom

Justin Bieber: From YouTube to Global Stardom

Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Stratford. As a child, he learned to play piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. At age 12, he entered a local singing competition — and his mother uploaded his performance videos to YouTube. Those videos changed music history: talent manager Scooter Braun discovered them in 2008, and Bieber became the first artist of the internet era.

The YouTube Discovery

Braun arranged for Bieber to meet Usher in Atlanta, and Bieber signed to Raymond Braun Media Group and Island Records. His debut EP, My World, was released in November 2009 and was certified platinum in the United States. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut release chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Baby and the Belieber Era

His first full-length album, My World 2.0, arrived in March 2010 and debuted at or near number one in several countries, led by the single "Baby." Under the Mistletoe (2011) and Believe (2012) both topped the Billboard 200. Bieber won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards in both 2010 and 2012, and his fanbase — known as Beliebers — became one of pop's most visible movements.

Reinvention: Purpose and Beyond

Bieber returned with Purpose in 2015, an album that produced three number-one singles in the US and showed a more mature sound. He later released Changes and Justice (2021), and in 2025 surprised fans with the albums Swag and Swag II. Across his career, he has won two Grammy Awards from 27 nominations, including wins for "Where Are Ü Now" and "10,000 Hours."

Bieber's Purpose era also made chart history: he became the first artist to hold the top three positions on the UK Singles Chart at the same time. He later featured on "Despacito," which became one of the biggest global hits of all time, and collaborated across genres with artists from EDM to Latin pop. His 2010 and 2012 American Music Awards Artist of the Year wins made him one of the youngest artists ever to take that honour twice.

Legacy

Justin Bieber proved that the internet could create a superstar. He was the first artist discovered on YouTube to reach the top of the charts, and he opened the door for a generation of artists who built audiences online before labels ever noticed them. His career is a blueprint for the streaming era.
