JioSaavn Royalties: How Indian Artists Get Paid

JioSaavn is one of India's biggest streaming platforms, and for Indian independent artists it is often the second-largest source of streams after YouTube. But how it pays is widely misunderstood. JioSaavn does not pay artists directly, does not publish a fixed per-stream rate, and does not accept direct uploads from independent artists. Your royalties travel through your distributor, and your effective rate depends on listener mix, subscription type, and the platform's revenue-sharing deals.
The revenue-sharing model
JioSaavn operates on a revenue-sharing model: a portion of the money it earns from subscriptions and advertising is shared with rightsholders in proportion to their streams. Each stream is therefore worth a small slice of a pool, not a fixed price. Free-tier listeners generate ad revenue; Premium subscribers generate subscription revenue. As with global platforms, paid listening is generally worth more per stream than ad-supported listening.
Estimated rates — treat with caution
No official JioSaavn per-stream rate is published. One Indian industry guide estimates roughly ₹50 to ₹100 per 1,000 Indian streams on JioSaavn (about ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 per lakh of streams). Treat this as a rough third-party estimate, not a guarantee — real rates vary by period, listener mix, and distributor terms. Indian-market streams on most platforms pay less per stream than US or UK streams, because subscription prices and ad rates are lower in India. Volume and consistency matter more than chasing a per-stream number.
How the money reaches you
You cannot upload to JioSaavn directly as an independent artist. Your distributor delivers your music, collects the royalties JioSaavn reports, and pays you under your distribution deal. Separately, plays on JioSaavn can generate performance royalties for the composition — the songwriter's side — which are collected in India by IPRS, not by your distributor. If you write your own songs and are not registered with IPRS, that half of your JioSaavn income is not reaching you.
How to earn more on JioSaavn
Claim your JioSaavn artist profile, keep your metadata accurate, release consistently, and pitch for editorial and curated playlists — playlist placement is the biggest lever on the platform. Regional-language music performs strongly on JioSaavn, so artists singing in Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Haryanvi, or other Indian languages should treat it as a primary platform, not an afterthought.
