Himesh Reshammiya: The Composer-Singer's Career

Himesh Reshammiya is one of the most recognisable figures in Bollywood music. Born on 23 July 1973, he went from producing television serials to composing blockbuster soundtracks, then became a playback singing phenomenon with a voice nobody else could imitate — and he is still headlining festivals decades later.
Early Life
Himesh is the son of Gujarati music director Vipin Reshammiya. He lost his elder brother at a young age and decided to take up music as his career to fulfil his father's wishes. He started his career with a production house, producing television serials for Zee TV from the age of 16, including Andaz, Amar Prem, and Aashiqui, and composing title songs for them.
Composer Breakthrough
Himesh started his career as a music director with the film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya in 1998. His real breakthrough as a composer came with Humraaz and later Tere Naam, which cemented his status as a leading composer. His compositions for films like Tere Naam, Aashiq Banaya Aapne, and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa became era-defining hits.
The Singing Phenomenon
In 2005, Himesh turned playback singer with "Aashiq Banaya Aapne", winning a Filmfare Award. His distinctive nasal singing style became his trademark — debated, imitated, and instantly recognisable. His 2006 album Aap Kaa Surroor became one of India's best-selling albums. He became the first Indian singer to perform at London's Wembley Arena and Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall.
Acting and Television
Himesh made his acting debut with Aap Kaa Surroor in 2007 and went on to act in films including Karzzzz, Radio, Khiladi 786, The Xposé, and Happy Hardy and Heer. He has served as a judge and mentor on reality shows including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge and Indian Idol, and produced films under his banner HR Musik Limited.
Still Going
Decades into his career, Himesh remains a live draw — headlining the 10th anniversary Bollywood Music Project festival in Mumbai in October 2026 — and continues to release music and films, including Badass Ravi Kumar (2025). From TV serials to Wembley Arena, from composing to singing to acting, his career has spanned almost every corner of the industry. Love his voice or debate it, nobody in Bollywood sounds like Himesh Reshammiya.
