Gaana and Regional Audiences in India: What Happened to Wynk Music

India's streaming audience does not live on one app. Millions of listeners discover music on Indian platforms built around regional languages, and Gaana is the biggest of them. If you sing in a regional language, or you want listeners beyond the Hindi and English charts, you need a plan for these platforms. You also need to know that one of them no longer exists.
Gaana: a subscription-only, regional-first audience
Gaana is a subscription-only platform, which means its listening data comes entirely from paying users. The platform calls these listeners TrueFans, and it reports that they listen with deliberate, sustained engagement rather than casual background play. Regional music drives a large share of its growth. In Gaana's 2025 listening recap, Assamese was the fastest-growing language on the platform, with a 42% increase in time spent listening. Punjabi pop, Bhojpuri, Haryanvi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam all showed strong repeat listening. For an independent artist in a regional language, that is an audience actively looking for music like yours.
Wynk Music has shut down
Wynk Music, launched by Bharti Airtel in 2014, was one of India's biggest streaming apps and ran Wynk Studio, a program that helped independent artists distribute and monetise their music. In August 2024, Airtel announced it would shut Wynk Music down and move its users to Apple Music under a new partnership with Apple. The app stopped streaming music in December 2024. Any guide that still tells you to distribute to Wynk Music is out of date. If your older releases show Wynk in their delivery history, that is a record of the past, not a live store.
Where the regional audience is now
- Gaana: subscription-only, strong in regional languages, worth prioritising for Indian releases.
- JioSaavn: a major Indian platform with deep regional catalogues and playlists.
- Spotify and Apple Music: both carry regional-language playlists and algorithmic discovery in India.
- YouTube Music: huge in India and often the first place regional songs go viral.
The lesson of Wynk is to never build your career on a single app. Distribute everywhere, collect your fans' contact details yourself, and treat every platform as rented space.
For regional-language artists, the practical takeaway is to pitch your music to regional playlists on the platforms that remain, and to tag your releases accurately by language. A Punjabi, Tamil, or Assamese track with correct language metadata is far more likely to reach the listeners who want it than one filed under a generic genre label.
