Elton John: Five Decades of Hits

Elton John: Five Decades of Hits

Sir Elton Hercules John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, England, is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 300 million records sold worldwide. A piano prodigy who won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, he became a defining figure of glam-era pop and rock — and the only artist to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award (EGOT).

The Taupin Partnership

John's songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin began in 1967, after both responded to an advertisement seeking musical talent. Taupin writes the lyrics; John composes the music. It became one of the greatest collaborations in music history, producing a catalogue of songs that have lasted more than half a century.

The 1970s Peak

After his debut album Empty Sky (1969), John's breakthrough arrived with his self-titled 1970 album featuring "Your Song." The 1970s brought a string of classics: Honky Château (1972), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), with songs including "Rocket Man," "Tiny Dancer," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

Candle in the Wind and the Farewell Tour

In 1997, his rewritten "Candle in the Wind 1997," a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, became one of the best-selling singles of all time. He composed music for The Lion King (1994), Aida (2000), and Billy Elliot the Musical (2005). His Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour (2018–2023) became the highest-grossing tour ever at the time. His life was dramatised in the 2019 biographical film Rocketman. His accolades include five Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards.

John's later successes include "I'm Still Standing," "Sacrifice," and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," written for The Lion King. His music for Billy Elliot the Musical and Aida brought his songwriting to Broadway and the West End. He was knighted for services to music and charity, and his Elton John AIDS Foundation has funded HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment work around the world for decades. His flamboyant costumes and theatrical performances made him a defining figure of glam-era pop.
