Ed Sheeran: The Loop Pedal, the Guitar, and the World

Edward Christopher Sheeran, born February 17, 1991, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, is an English singer-songwriter who built a global career from the simplest setup imaginable: one voice, one guitar, and a loop pedal. He began writing songs around the age of eleven and turned busking-level persistence into stadium-filling success.
Early Life and Independent Beginnings
Raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, Sheeran sang in a local church choir as a child and learned guitar while still at school. His early influences included artists like Damien Rice and Bob Dylan. In early 2011, he independently released the extended play No.5 Collaborations Project, and signed with Asylum Records the same year. His debut album, + ("Plus"), followed in 2011, topped the UK Albums Chart, was certified seven-times platinum in the UK, and featured his breakout hit, "The A Team."
Multiply and the Song of the Year
His second studio album, × ("Multiply"), arrived in 2014 and became the second-best-selling album worldwide of 2015. It won the Brit Award for British Album of the Year, and its single "Thinking Out Loud" won two Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year. In 2015, he also established his own record label, Gingerbread Man Records. Earlier, in 2012, he had won the Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act — recognition that his one-man live show was becoming a force in British music.
Divide and Global Domination
His third album, ÷ ("Divide"), released in 2017, became the best-selling album worldwide of that year. Its joint-lead singles, "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill," debuted in the top two positions on the charts in several countries, while "Perfect" reached number one in the US, Australia, and the UK. The world's best-selling artist of 2017, he was named the Global Recording Artist of the Year.
Legacy
Sheeran continued with No.6 Collaborations Project (2019), = ("Equals") in 2021, − ("Subtract") in 2023, Autumn Variations (2023), and Play (2025). In 2019, he was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world. He has won four Grammy Awards, written songs for artists including Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and One Direction, and sold over 150 million records worldwide — proof that honest songwriting and relentless touring still win.
