Brand Partnerships for Artists: How Endorsements Work

Brand Partnerships for Artists: How Endorsements Work

Music artists are becoming some of the most sought-after brand ambassadors in India, challenging film stars and cricketers. From Diljit Dosanjh fronting Levi's to A.R. Rahman partnering with Harman, musicians are proving that fandom converts into sales. Here is how brand partnerships actually work — and how artists can land them.

How endorsement deals work

An endorsement deal is a written agreement between the artist and the brand. The artist agrees to a list of tasks — called deliverables — which might include a certain number of social media posts, appearances, product placement in a music video or photoshoot, or performing at brand events. In exchange, the artist receives compensation through money, free goods, or product discounts. The deal must be clearly articulated: both sides agree to specifics, and the artist must complete the deliverables.

What brands want

Brands want cultural relevance, content, access to an audience, event presence, product integration, music licensing, and social reach. Audience fit matters more than raw size — an artist with a devoted niche audience can be more useful to the right brand than a generic creator with far more followers. Brands also check that an artist is brand-safe: old posts, controversy, and audience sentiment all get examined before a partnership.

Indian artists leading the way

Music artists in India are gaining ground in endorsements. Diljit Dosanjh has signed as brand ambassador for Levi's and endorsed brands including Coca-Cola, Fila, and boAT. A.R. Rahman has maintained a long-term partnership with Harman and several other brands. Badshah has partnered with Dyson's OnTrac headphones and the automobile marketplace Droom. Jasleen Royal's song Heeriye featured boAT products, and she later joined boAT as brand ambassador. Top-tier artists have secured deals reported to be worth between ₹1 crore and ₹2 crore per brand association.

Who brokers the deals?

Management agencies are the bridge. They negotiate brand deals, bookings, and contracts, and help artists navigate sync opportunities. Without the right team, many deals never reach the artist. Agencies also help artists avoid bad fits — a partnership with a brand that clashes with the artist's image can damage credibility.

How independent artists can start

You do not need millions of followers to work with brands. Build a clear identity, keep your public presence brand-safe, and show brands you have an engaged audience they can reach. Start with small, honest collaborations — local businesses, product features, event appearances — and build a track record. Get every deal in writing, and have a lawyer check the contract before signing.
