Bad Bunny: Latin Trap's Global King

Bad Bunny: Latin Trap's Global King

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known as Bad Bunny, was born on March 10, 1994, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Dubbed the "King of Latin Trap," he is widely credited with helping Spanish-language rap reach mainstream global popularity. He rose from uploading music to SoundCloud while studying audiovisual communication — and became the most-streamed artist on the planet.

Diles and the Breakthrough

Bad Bunny broke through in 2016 with "Diles," which led to a recording contract with Hear This Music. He gained global recognition with his feature on Cardi B's Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "I Like It" (2018) and "Mía" with Drake. His debut album, X 100pre (2018), was ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

History-Making Albums

His second solo album, YHLQMDLG (2020), became Spotify's most-streamed album of the year worldwide. El Último Tour del Mundo (2020) became the first all-Spanish-language album to top the US Billboard 200. Un Verano Sin Ti (2022) was the year's most successful album globally. He followed with the Billboard 200 number-one albums Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana (2023) and Debí Tirar Más Fotos (2025).

Album of the Year — In Spanish

Debí Tirar Más Fotos became the first Spanish-language album to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Bad Bunny has won multiple Grammy Awards and numerous Latin Grammy Awards, and has been Spotify's most-streamed artist globally multiple times. He has also acted in films including Bullet Train and the series Narcos: Mexico, and headlined the Super Bowl halftime show.

Bad Bunny's career also spans film, television, and wrestling: he has appeared in the series Narcos: Mexico, performed in WWE, and acted in the film Bullet Train. His 2019 collaborative album Oasis with J Balvin added to his run of hits, and his feature on Cardi B's "I Like It" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He has won multiple Billboard Music Awards and Billboard Latin Music Awards, and his tours have broken sales records for Latin artists worldwide.

Legacy

Bad Bunny proved that an artist could conquer the world without ever switching to English. He carried Puerto Rican culture, Spanish-language rap, and reggaeton to the very top of global music — on his own terms. He remains the clearest proof that Spanish-language music needs no translation to conquer the globe.
