Anirudh Ravichander: Tamil Cinema's Music Phenomenon

Anirudh Ravichander, born 16 October 1990 in Chennai, is one of the most influential music directors in Indian cinema today. Working primarily in Tamil cinema, he has also composed for Telugu and Hindi films. He has won two Filmfare Awards South, ten SIIMA Awards, six Edison Awards, and five Vijay Awards. His rise from a viral debut to the composer behind some of India's biggest blockbusters is one of the defining music stories of the past decade.

The Kolaveri Explosion

Anirudh studied classical piano at Trinity College of Music in London and graduated in Visual Communication from Loyola College in Chennai. His formal entry into feature films came when director Aishwarya R. Dhanush hired him to score her film 3, starring Dhanush and Shruti Haasan. His debut song, "Why This Kolaveri Di," released in November 2011, went viral across the globe, becoming one of the most-watched Indian videos of its time and turning a 21-year-old composer into a household name overnight.

Building a Blockbuster Career

After 3, Anirudh composed for a string of successful Tamil films, including Ethir Neechal (2013), Kaththi (2014), Maari (2015), Vedalam (2015), Remo (2016), and Jersey (2019). The Kaththi soundtrack, which included the viral hit "Selfie Pulla," became his highest-profile work at that point, until he was signed to compose for Rajinikanth's Petta in 2019. His music blends electronic dance music, hip-hop, and Western synth arrangements with traditional Indian folk sounds.

Pan-India Crossover

In 2016, Anirudh signed a record deal with Sony Music, which publishes his independent albums and live concerts, and featured with Diplo on a remix of Major Lazer's "Cold Water." His background scores for films such as Vikram, Master, Leo, and Jailer became cultural talking points in their own right. In 2023, he achieved major nationwide crossover success in Hindi cinema with Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan, cementing his status as a pan-Indian composer.

Legacy

Anirudh is also an accomplished playback singer, lending his voice to songs in his own compositions and for other composers. Through his Sony Music deal, his independent albums and live concerts reach audiences beyond film music, and his high-energy live shows have become a signature part of his career. His journey shows how a single viral moment, backed by consistent craft and an ear for what young audiences want, can grow into one of the most powerful runs in Indian film music.
